The WD My Passport SSD offers 500MBps on the top end, which is much faster than other external drives in its price range. The $239 (£229, AU$399) 1TB model I tested managed to hit 447MBps read speed (in files smaller than 4KB), while write speeds maxed out at 1050MBps. That’s fast enough to easily transfer large files or clone an entire hard drive without wasting too much time.
The only downside is that it’s expensive at $369 for the 2TB model and $699 for the 4TB option. However, you won’t find many other external drives as fast as this one at those prices. Introduction
The My Passport SSD is the latest addition to Western Digital’s family of portable hard drives. The name might suggest otherwise, but this is actually an external solid-state drive (SSD) rather than a traditional spinning drive, which means it has no moving parts and a much higher tolerance for rough use.
Available in capacities up to 2TB, it promises speeds of up to 1050MB/s, and comes with password protection and 256-bit AES hardware encryption. It also features a USB Type-C (USB-C) connector that works both ways up so is less likely to go down the wrong hole first time.
That’s not all good news though, as it means you’ll need the included USB-C cable or an optional adapter to connect the drive to older computers until they fall out of service or are replaced by newer models.
What’s in the box
The My Passport SSD comes in a small, square box with the WD logo at the top. On the left side is a photo of the drive itself and its official name, while the right side of the package is black to match the rest of the packaging.
Inside, you’ll find a small pamphlet that has some basic information on it and three stickers. One is rectangular and features Western Digital’s logo, while another has a smaller version of the same logo and another is a simple rectangle with the word “WD” on it. There’s also an orange-colored USB Type-C cable included, which can be used to charge up your phone or connect your SSD to a computer.
Of course, all of this is overshadowed by what Western Digital includes in its package: a 1TB My Passport SSD. This drive is quite thin, measuring just 0.39 inches (9.95mm) thick and weighing in at 1.6 ounces (45 grams). It’s not so small that you’ll lose it easily, but it’s definitely portable enough to take with you on your travels or even just throw into your bag for daily use when you’re out and about or traveling for work or school.
Design & Setup
The My Passport SSD can be describe in a single word: fast. It’s the first external USB drive that I’ve used that didn’t feel like an external drive; it’s more like a pocket-sized internal SSD. Though I did notice the device got a little warm when moving large files to it, the device was otherwise silent.
The design of the drive is completely solid state and doesn’t have any moving parts inside. The casing of the My Passport SSD feels sturdy and well-built, with rubber bumpers on each corner of the drive to help protect it from drops or knocks. The top of the drive has a glossy finish with WD branding, while the bottom is matte black with a product sticker and four rubber feet to keep the drive from slipping around on your desk.
The My Passport SSD is compatible with Windows 10 and macOS High Sierra or later out of the box. I didn’t run into any software issues during my testing, and both platforms recognized the external drive as soon as I plugged it in via USB-C.
